Biology 9-10th Grade
Instructor: Tim Duggan
Text: Prectice Hall: Biology, by Miller and Levine
Overview of Course:
Prentice Hall Biology utilizes a student-friendly approach that
provides a powerful framework for connecting the key concepts of
biology. New BIG IDEAs help all students focus on the most
important concepts. Students explore concepts through engaging
narrative, frequent use of analogies, familiar examples, and
clear and instructional graphics. This course will involve lab
work, including several dissections. All subjects, especially
evolution, will be taught from a biblical point of view.
Topics Covered:
UNIT 1: The Nature of Life
UNIT 2: Ecology
UNIT 3: Cells
UNIT 4: Genetics
UNIT 5: Evolution
UNIT 6: Microorganisms and Fungi
UNIT 7: Plants
UNIT 8: Invertebrates
UNIT 9: Chordates
UNIT 10: The Human Body
Anatomy & Physiology 11-12th Grade
Instructor: Lisa Swieson
Text: TBD
Overview of Course:
Anatomy & physiology is a rigorous, upper-level course for
students who have completed high-school biology and chemistry.
In addition to learning the structure (anatomy) of the human
body, students will also go deeper, to the cellular level, to
learn its function (physiology). Book learning and class
discussion will be regularly supplemented with hands-on labs,
including an animal dissection to see how it all comes together.
Topics Covered:
1. Integumentary System (Skin)
2. Skeletal System
3. Muscular System
4. Nervous System
5. Endocrine System
6. Cardiovascular System
7. Lymphatic System
8. Immune System
9. Respiratory System
10. Digestive System
Genetics 11-12th Grade
Instructor: Lisa Swieson
Text: TBD
Overview of Course:
Genetics is a rigorous, upper-level course for students who have
completed high-school biology and chemistry. Students will learn
basic Mendelian genetics as well as molecular genetics and
genetic technology. Hands-on labs will include classical
genetics (fruit fly crosses!) as well as biotechnology
(recombinant DNA!).
Topics Covered:
1. Mendelian Genetics
2. Chromosome Mapping
3. Mutations
4. DNA
5. Translation
6. Regulation of Gene Expression
7. Cancer
8. DNA Technology
9. Genomics
Forensics 11-12th Grade
Instructor: Lisa Swieson
Text: The Forensic Casebook
Overview of Course:
Forensics is a fun one-term course for students who have
completed high-school biology and chemistry. Students will
become crime scene investigators as they observe mock crime
scenes and analyze evidence using modern technology.
Topics Covered:
1. Fingerprint Analysis
2. Blood Spatter Patterns
3. Firearm Evidence
4. Forensic Entomology, Botany, & Zoology
5. Blood Factors and the DNA Fingerprint
6. Forensic Odontology & Anthropology
7. Autopsy
